About Capitol Guardianship Services
Capitol
Guardianship Services provides fiduciary services, trust and estate
management, financial management assistance, case management, and
guardianship services. The mission of the firm is to help individuals
remain independent for as long as possible and/or to anticipate, address,
and solve the numerous legal, financial, and personal problems that arise
in the daily life of a person with limited health, mobility, or acuity.
The firm's role
with most clients is a specific legal relationship such as trustee, guardian,
or power-of-attorney, and care for the life of the client. Capitol
Guardianship Services often establishes strong, lasting bonds with a client
and family. Currently, Capitol Guardianship Services has responsibility for
approximately 100 clients. Clients range in age from 6 to 96 years. They
reside both in and outside of the State of Washington.
An individual
may be referred to Capitol Guardianship Services for a variety of reasons.
A person may have challenges related to aging, physical health, mental
illness, brain injury, and developmental disability, or require assistance
due to their minor status. Capitol Guardianship Services becomes involved
with the individual at a time of social, medical, or legal upheaval. Often,
the person's financial affairs are in disarray, or their personal and
financial needs are not being met. The firm also helps individuals of all
ages when family members are unable or unwilling to help, when family
members cannot resolve disagreements, or when a particular need for
financial or human service expertise is required.
As much as
possible, we support the individual’s personal preferences as to where to
live and to make decisions. This includes living in a typical home setting.
A person with physical or mental issues can often remain independent with
support. Should an individual require greater assistance, Capitol
Guardianship Services aims to help in developing non-institutional
services. Service decisions are made to maintain continuity of care in
identifying and meeting the emerging needs of each client.
When managing
trusts or estates, the firm closely adheres to all legal responsibilities
and duties outlined in the enabling document or order. In its work, Capitol
Guardianship Services involves the client and the clients family to the
greatest extent possible.
History
The business was
established in Olympia in 1988, incorporated in 1995 by Keith Klovee-Smith,
and was originally called Guardianship Services of the South Sound. Keith
chose to switch to the banking industry and now works for the trust
department of Wells Fargo Bank.
Capitol
Guardianship Services was established in July of 2005 as a successor to
Guardianship Services of South Sound. Very little changed in this process.
Capitol has the same location and staff as before. Capitol Guardianship
Services is a registered trade name of Guardianship Services of Seattle and is one of
the oldest guardianship agencies in the country. More information about
Guardianship Services of Seattle
can be found at www.trustguard.com.
Capitol
Guardianship Services is a Washington State Certified Professional
Guardianship Agency (certification #10350). The firm is covered by a $2
million professional liability, a $1 million general employee dishonesty
bond and policy, and holds bonds in excess of $3.5 million to protect their
clients in individual cases.
Fees
Many services
are billed at an hourly rate. Individuals seeking ongoing financial and/or trust
management are normally charged a percent of the trust assets each year.
Fees and hours associated with guardianship services are determined by the
Superior Court.
